The Spot

During our stay in Kauai, Matias and I were looking for a good breakfast place that was open early enough for us so we could eat before hiking. Lucky for us we found The Spot in a shopping center near our Airbnb in Princeville. It was literally five minutes away! I was a little bit unsure about this restaurant at first because of the Yelp menu photos — they were fairly limited and only showcased the options from the Kapaa location. However, the new North Shore location offers breakfast food with vegan options that are not just limited to açaí bowls and the like! This was great news because I was really craving some warm I do on most occasions. I don’t know about you all, but I only like having açaí bowls later in the day.

That being said, The Spot North Shore is a small shop where you order inside and sit in the outdoor seating area just outside the restaurant. The staff are very friendly and helpful when it comes to accommodating to dietary preferences or restrictions. They offer tofu scrambles, gluten free options, non-dairy drinks, and much more. They are not strictly vegan or vegetarian so they have options for everybody, which is great. The seating area outside the restaurant can get busy depending on the day of the week you’re visiting. For instance, it’s generally busier during weekend mornings when compared to weekday mornings. It’s also worth nothing that the seating area is shared not only with other restaurants but with the local hens, roosters, chicks, and cats. All of the wild animals are very comfortable around people so don’t be surprised if you find yourself surround by some birds looking to share some of your breakfast!

I ordered the mushroom spinach tofu scramble croissant sandwich (what a mouthful!) on both occasions that we went to The Spot for breakfast. So, you can imagine that I really liked it! The tofu scramble alone had an amazing combination of spices - mainly turmeric - that gave it that savory breakfast taste that I was looking for. Now, combine that with sautéed mushrooms, spinach, and tomatoes and voila, you’ve got yourself a great meal! Now I do want to mention that the original menu item does contain Havarti cheese and aioli sauce - but you can modify the dish like I did and get it vegan. I paired the croissant sandwich with a chai latte with soy milk and it really hit the spot (pun intended). If chai isn’t your thing, no worries - there are plenty or other drinks to be had!

After visiting twice, I can safely say that The Spot is one of the restaurants worth visiting on your next trip to Kauai. They are a little bit on the pricier side - but I do believe that they have quality food and service. As I mentioned earlier, they do offer a wide variety of food, from more traditional breakfast items to sorbet and yogurt bowls - there are plenty of options for everyone. You can find The Spot in Kapaa and its new location in the North Shore. I know I will be going back for another sandwich next time we head to Kauai.
